The fruit is Karonda scientifically known as Carissa carandas, it is a flowering shrub plant belonging to the Apocinaceae family. It is known as Kerenda in Malaya, Bengal grapes or Kalakkai in South India, Namteng, Karamba, Karanda in Thailand, and Perungila in the Philippines.

Karonda is a fruit with a sweet and sour taste. Due to the high content of iron and minerals in these fruits, they are used to reduce blood pressure and diabetes. Apart from this, in villages pickled fruits and used for health benefits. In Salem district, Kalrayanmalai, Pachamalai, Neiyamalai, Manmalai, Nagaluru, 740 km of forest area, a large number of karonda fruits are grown. In the months of July and August, the harvest of these fruits starts.

The leaves, flowers, and fruits of this Karonda tree are used as medicine for many ailments. Although it looks small in form, it has many uses. You can buy it in fruit form, powder form, or tablet form in the market. Before eating Karonda fruit, the seeds should be removed completely and eaten. It is best eaten mainly when it is half ripe. With its sour and acidic taste, a touch of salt is enough to make our tongue tingle.
