Year - 1877

* Severe famine in our country India in the year 1877. Death due to starvation exceeds 50 lakhs. Probably even malnourished children who have turned to bone and skin due to hunger!

* Therefore, Christian organizations from the United States came to India to provide medical treatment and food. That is how Dr. John came to Ranipet. His 14-year-old daughter Ida Scudder

* One night there is a knock on the door. Ida opens the door, a Brahmin is standing and asking. "Mom, my wife is in labor pain, come to check right away" he cries.!

* Ida says, "I'm not a doctor, my dad is a doctor, wait a moment,  I'll wake him up"

* "No mom. my wife is just 14 years old. We are Brahmins, the woman is not allowed to touch any other man other than the husband" and leaves.

* After a while, a Muslim person knocks on the door for the same request. He requested Ida to come and check his wife immediately because of labor pains. Ida again says my father is a doctor. The Muslim says, "No mom, we are Muslims where men should never see housewives."

* Ida suffers from anxiety all night long about what happened to those women. The next morning, Ida bursts into tears when she sees the pregnant woman's body being carried across her house.

*"What country is this? Women can not be educated, but women only should be allowed to see childbirth? What if women are not educated in this country, I will study and come back and save these women," Ida goes to study in the United States and becomes a doctor!

* A fellow friend falls in love with Ida, but Ida rejects that love. Jobs came to her in the United States as soon as she graduated from medical school, and Ida refuses. Only the bodies of those women who died in Tamil Nadu came to her mind frequently!!

* She thinks how many people can be saved in Tamil Nadu just by studying and realized the need for a hospital. She asked for financial help from many countries citing India's plight. She got some funds...!

* The funds to build the first small hospital were donated by a New York banker, Mr. Schell, in memory of his late wife Mary. He actually gave Ida Scudder more money than she asked for because he wanted it, he said, to be a “very good hospital”.

* Ida sets foot in Tamil Nadu on the first day of the 20th century, determined not to let a single pregnant woman die.

* Begins construction of the hospital. The hospital was eventually completed with 40 beds.

* At a time when there is no room for talk of feminism, young Ida completed building a hospital for women!

* That is the pride of Asia. Vellore "CMC (Christian Medical College - Research Institution in Vellore), which is still a century old today." Hospital !!

* Right from the beginning, Ida knew that she needed to train women to help women. Initially, it was compounders and nurses: formal nurse training began in 1909. By the year 1918, she proudly opened the Missionary Medical School for Women, which offered the LMP (Licensed Medical Practitioner) course. In 1942 this was upgraded to a full MBBS degree course, and men were admitted from 1947 onwards. The Nursing School became the first College of Nursing in India in 1946 and is now a WHO collaborating center for Nursing and Midwifery.

* Who is this girl? Why did she cry for us? Why did she melt for us? Why did she live for us?

* Can we believe Ida, who was born somewhere, grew up somewhere, and devoted her entire life to our country, is the "guide" to Mother Teresa?!

* Ida gathers 5 young girls wandering around and gives them training. These are the first 5 nurses in Tamil Nadu!

* I do not know how many people today think that Ida is an original seed to study medicine by many women now!.

* The candle, lit by a woman standing alone, is still shining brightly today, world-class, in Vellore. Giving life to millions of people!

* My heartfelt thanks not only to the human deity "Ida", but to all the white coat mothers who are risking their lives in today's dangerous environment!
